How to Take Your Measurements
Use a flexible measuring tape and stand naturally while measuring. Keep the tape level and comfortably snug instead of pulling it tightly. Use the same unit for every measurement.
Bust
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your bust. Keep the tape level across your back.
Waist
Measure around your natural waist, generally the narrower area between your ribcage and hips. Keep your stomach relaxed.
Hips
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Make sure the tape remains level.
Shoulders
This measurement is optional. Measure across the widest part of your shoulders.
Understanding Your Result
Hourglass
This category generally describes bust and hip measurements that are relatively close while the waist is noticeably smaller. If you like emphasizing the waist, wrap dresses, fitted tops, high-rise bottoms and waist-defined jackets can be useful choices.
Pear
This category generally describes hips that are noticeably wider than the upper body. Fitted tops, interesting necklines, structured jackets and high-rise bottoms are options you can experiment with.
Inverted Triangle
This category generally describes an upper body that is wider than the hips. Streamlined tops and fuller or more detailed bottoms can create visual balance if that is the look you prefer.
Rectangle
This category generally describes relatively similar upper and lower measurements with less difference between the waist and bust or hips. Belts, shaped jackets, layered outfits and waist details can add definition when desired.
Apple
This category generally describes proportions where the waist or midsection is relatively prominent compared with the hips. Open necklines, structured jackets, straight-leg trousers and clean vertical lines are styling options to consider.
How This Calculator Works
The calculator compares your bust, waist and hip measurements to estimate which of five broad fashion categories most closely matches your proportions. Optional shoulder measurements can provide additional information about the upper body.
The result is not a strict label. Real body proportions exist on a spectrum, and many people have characteristics that overlap two or more categories.
Using Your Result When Shopping
Dresses
Look at the measurements that matter most for the garment. Bust, waist and hip measurements can be more useful than relying only on the size printed on the label.
Jeans and Pants
Compare your waist and hip measurements with the retailer’s size chart. Rise, stretch, fabric and cut can significantly change the way a pair of jeans fits.
Tops
Bust and shoulder measurements can help when selecting tops. Also consider the intended fit, sleeve construction and fabric.
Jackets
Shoulder and bust measurements are especially useful for jackets. Always check the garment’s own measurement chart when shopping online.
